Nicosia is the last divided capital city in the world. The Green Line — the UN buffer zone — runs directly through the city centre. This is either fascinating or haunting depending on your temperament.

Cross the Ledra Street checkpoint into Northern Cyprus and walk 10 minutes to the Büyük Han — a 16th century Ottoman caravanserai now housing craft workshops and a café. Then walk back through the buffer zone past abandoned buildings frozen since 1974. It is one of the strangest and most moving urban experiences in Europe.
