People who want one of the most visually extraordinary places on earth as a base. Underground cities, fairy chimneys, cave churches with Byzantine frescoes, hiking the Rose Valley and Love Valley at sunrise. A genuine small-town community has grown around the tourism with its own character.
You are living in a landscape formed by volcanic eruptions 3 million years ago, carved into homes by early Christians fleeing persecution, and now inhabited by people running boutique cave hotels and balloon tour companies. The hot air balloons launch at dawn every morning the weather permits. It is as extraordinary as it sounds and the tourist infrastructure is significant.
Living costs are genuinely affordable here — your money goes further than in most Western cities. Climate is seasonal but manageable — winters exist but don't dominate. Sunshine is abundant — nearly year-round sun if that matters to your mood. The rewards for exploring are exceptional — layers of history, culture, and surprise around every corner.
Binary signals — not scores.

The Göreme Open Air Museum has the frescoed cave churches but closes at 5pm. The hike to the Uçhisar castle at sunrise across the Rose Valley before any tours have started is free, takes 90 minutes, and is more beautiful than anything in the museum. Bring a torch for the cave churches en route.
